Description
Authentic Andean Craftsmanship: 100% Wool Hooded Poncho
Handmade in the Ecuadorian Andes, this heavy wool hooded poncho is woven from 100% sheep’s wool for substantial warmth, breathability and durability. At nearly 3 lbs, it has the weight and feel of a traditional wool textile—made for cold days, outdoor adventures and cozy layering.
The Andean Stripe design combines cream, gray and brown in an earthy striped pattern that’s easy to wear and layer. Each poncho is artisan-made, so slight variations are part of what makes every piece unique.
Naturally Warm Wool
Wool has been valued for generations as a practical cold-weather fiber, and there’s a reason it remains so useful outdoors.
- Warm & Breathable: Wool provides excellent insulation while naturally helping regulate temperature.
- Warm Even When Damp: Unlike many fibers, wool retains much of its insulating ability when damp.
- Naturally Water Resistant: Wool’s structure and natural lanolin provide some resistance to mist and light moisture. This is not a waterproof garment.
- Substantial Construction: At nearly 3 lbs, this is a thick wool poncho that provides a substantial outer layer against cold and wind.
Artisan Details & Three Distinct Designs
The Andean Stripe features an earthy combination of cream, gray and brown stripes, and each poncho features blanket-stitch edging, a deep hood with an adjustable drawstring, and functional buttons at the neckline. Because these ponchos are artisan-made, small variations in weave, color and dimensions are natural.

Meet the Artisans: Bolo & Elena
These ponchos are made by Carlos and Elena in their home workshop in Ecuador. We had the opportunity to visit them personally, see where they work, and spend time learning more about the products they make. That direct relationship matters to us. We work with artisan families without layers of sourcing middlemen. Our artisans set their prices, and we honor their craft and skill. Finding these particular wool ponchos took time. Their substantial 100% wool construction, distinctive Andean designs and attention to detail are what made Bolo and Elena’s work stand out to us.
That’s part of what Dignity Woven In means at Los Andes Shop.
FAQ
How do I clean my wool poncho?
For small areas, we recommend gentle spot cleaning with cold water and mild detergent. When the entire poncho needs cleaning, professional dry cleaning is the safest option.
Will wool still keep me warm if it gets damp?
Yes. Wool retains insulating properties when damp, which is one reason it has long been valued for outdoor clothing. Its natural properties can also help shed light moisture, although this poncho is not waterproof or rainwear.
How warm is the poncho?
At nearly 3 lbs, this is a substantial wool outer layer designed for cold weather. Actual comfort will depend on temperature, wind, activity and what you wear underneath it.
