Our Otavalan friends who craft this innovative poncho have named it the “Ayllu.” Dating back to preColombian times, the word Ayllu originally meant a family/social network for the natives of the Andes. Most recently, it has been used to refer to the indigenous protest movements in Quito, in which the Ayllu network provided important communication and support, and a means of maintaining indigenous identity.
